“If I have good medical insurance why do I need travel insurance?”

Travel insurance is a way of minimizing the considerable financial risks associated with traveling – accidents, illness, flight delays/ cancellations and, in the worst possible case, death.

Essentially there are a number of different types of travel insurance with varying benefits. Many of you will already have a medical insurance policy in place which would cover the high-end medical costs abroad, but would not include things such as loss of baggage, trip cancellation, etc.

LawtonAsia offer a variety of travel insurance products to match your needs. For instance, if you intend to take part in certain sports overseas you’ll need specialist cover. Furthermore, while you might think items such as your golf clubs are fully covered by your travel insurance, you may well find that when you look at the replacement costs of your clubs they are much higher than the limit on your cover (personal items are normally only covered up to a maximum of 50,000 baht, whereas a good set of new clubs can cost 100,000 baht or more). Therefore if you intend to take high value items abroad, we suggest that you discuss it with us, so that you have specific cover for those items when you travel.

If you are robbed while on holiday, make sure you get a police report straight after the theft (go to the nearest police station, taking along your passport, and fill in a report itemizing everything that was stolen). In many instances we have found that people have had items stolen and subsequently tried to make a claim on their insurance, only to run into difficulties with the insurer as there has been no police report relating to the stolen items. One further piece of advice: only carry a limited amount of cash as the overall cash limit on most travel insurance policies is quite low (Baht10,000).

The final thing you need to be aware of is that if there is a ‘travel advisory’ in force from your embassy that suggests it might be dangerous to visit a certain country, then this often invalidates your travel insurance while you are in that country. Thailand during the ‘yellow shirts’ occupation of the airport is a good example. The USA, and many other embassies, issued advice not to visit during this time and for most of those who did, their travel insurance was not valid while they were here.

If you need advice on any travel products, please feel free to call us.

We’re pleased to announce that our new card system is currently being installed in our network of hospitals and primary care clinics. The system provides members with electronic swipe cards which, on presentation, allow the healthcare provider to electronically assess whether the member is eligible for cover for the condition for which they require treatment. The card is used in the same way as a credit card and securely links to the database which contains the member’s insurance policy data.

The use of this network should make life easier for all members as it will just require the swipe of the card to see if an ailment is covered and then, after treatment, another swipe to ensure payment is made by the insurer to the hospital without any further input from the patient. Eventually we hope to roll this card out to all those with international medical policies.
